Educators across the board are the unsung heroes in our lives. We all have memories of those special teachers from our school days who left an indelible mark on us, which is why we feel compelled to show them our gratitude with a token of appreciation.
We went directly to the horse’s mouth and sought the advice of Kennedy Ling, an elementary school teacher based in North Carolina, to find out which gifts teachers truly cherish—and which ones they could do without. “I’m always particularly fond of gifts that are both thoughtful and practical,” Ling remarks. “Items like Amazon gift cards, Paper Mate flair pens, sticky notes, and essential classroom supplies are my favorites.”
Note: Since public school teachers are considered government employees, the value of gifts they’re allowed to receive may vary by state. It’s advisable for parents and guardians to check their state’s board of education website for specific guidelines before purchasing any gifts.
As for gifts that are better avoided, coffee mugs top the list. “While I appreciate any gift from my students and their families, after five years of teaching, I’ve accumulated quite a collection of coffee mugs that don’t see much use,” Ling confesses.
However, you can still cater to your teacher’s love for caffeine. “If you know your child’s teacher is a coffee aficionado, a gift card to a local coffee shop is a great choice,” Ling suggests. “Even better if it’s close to the school!”
When it comes to classroom essentials, one item teachers can never have enough of is pens. Consider restocking their supply with reliable options like Paper Mate Flair felt tip pens. This vibrant set includes 12 pens in playful, tropical-inspired hues such as aqua, papaya, and tangerine. Paper Mate Flair pens are a classroom favorite due to their medium-point felt tip and ink that resists smearing, fading, and bleeding through paper.
In search of a fail-safe gift for your child’s teacher? Gift cards, gift cards, gift cards. “Some may find Amazon gift cards predictable, but they are invaluable to teachers,” Ling asserts. “We can find almost everything we need for our classrooms on Amazon! Walmart and Target gift cards are同样受欢迎, too.”
If you want to add a personal touch to your gift card, consider purchasing a customizable holder from Elle and H Co. on Etsy.
Teachers, too, look forward to refreshing their school supplies. Consider gifting the Monolike sticky memo pad to a teacher who appreciates visually appealing desk accessories. The set includes four memo pad bundles with modern, subtle color palettes.

Remember your child’s unique relationship with their teacher as you shop for gifts. If your child eagerly anticipate story time with Mr. Smith, consider a literature-themed gift and a heartfelt note. Or, if your tween bonded with Mrs. Pagnotta over their shared love for Taylor Swift, a Swiftie-themed present is sure to delight.

“The most useful and considerate gift I received from a student was a handheld vacuum cleaner. It was my first year teaching, and one of my first-grade students was prone to making a mess during snack time. One day, he arrived with a neatly wrapped gift and the biggest smile on his face. Before I could even open it, he said, ‘This is for you! It’s a vacuum cleaner because I told my mommy how you help me clean up my messes!’ That vacuum cleaner has made my life so much easier over the years, and I think of that sweet, messy first grader every time I use it.” – Kennedy Ling, elementary school teacher
