The good news is that a bathroom overhaul doesn’t always mean gutting the entire space and starting anew. The Houzz study reveals that 61% of homeowners prioritize system upgrades—such as improved ventilation, heating, or plumbing—over layout changes, which are only implemented by 36%. Furthermore, nearly four out of ten (39%) renovators opt to expand their shower area.

While accent walls may be falling out of favor in other parts of the house, they remain a staple in bathroom renovations. Approximately a third (31%) of renovators are integrating accent walls, with blue being the top choice for 18% of these enhancements.
Wet rooms, which are fully waterproofed spaces where the shower seamlessly blends with the rest of the bathroom, are on the rise. Houzz reports that the proportion of projects featuring wet rooms has increased by 3 percentage points annually, now accounting for 16% of all renovated bathrooms. The primary motivation for choosing wet rooms is to maximize space (50%), followed by their aesthetic appeal (29%) and enhanced accessibility (26%).
In wet room renovations, freestanding flat-bottom tubs are the preferred choice for 57% of homeowners, with alcove tubs coming in second at 27%. When it comes to bathtub types, soaking tubs are the clear favorite, with 74% of renovators selecting them. Standard tubs are chosen by just 20%, and an even smaller percentage (2%) opt for walk-in tubs.
The clatter of drawers and cabinet doors slamming shut is far from relaxing, which is why many homeowners are incorporating soft-close mechanisms into their bathroom makeovers. Among those renovating, 78% choose soft-close drawers, and 75% opt for soft-close doors.
