Embrace the Charm of Wildflower Table Settings for a Playful Summer Vibe in Your Home Decor

Wildflowers are all the rage for their untamed and earthy charm, offering a more accessible option compared to classic floral displays. To capture the essence of wildflowers in your arrangement, blend local flowers, diverse textures, and lush greenery, steering clear of thick stems and overly polished additions. Employ fundamental floral design principles, such as creating focal points and providing structural support, to ensure your arrangement appears thoughtfully crafted.

The practice of adorning one’s home with fresh flowers will never go out of style; however, overly manicured bouquets might fade as the effortless allure of wildflowers gains momentum. Arranging a variety of mismatched flowers on your table infuses a sense of nature into your space with an easy-going, playful vibe—and in these times, a touch of whimsy is much needed.

Rather than meticulously assembling a bouquet of roses or a single type of flower, embrace a free-spirited approach by experimenting with color, texture, and varying heights to compose a stunning wildflower centerpiece. Summer is an ideal season to dive into this trend, especially if you have a garden brimming with flowers to play with. Either way, here are some useful tips to get you started.

For those with their own garden, incorporating wildflowers into decor is both accessible and cost-effective compared to purchasing from a florist. Many supermarket bouquets now cater to the wildflower trend by offering mixed arrangements using in-season flowers. Wherever you source them, they provide a refreshing departure from conventional floral arrangements.

“Floral trends, much like fashion trends, are always evolving,” notes Justin Lievano, the floral design manager at UrbanStems. “But wildflowers also exude a sense of rebellion and joy compared to the more traditional, formal arrangements.”

Consider wedding flowers: formal events often feature meticulously styled, uniformly matched arrangements.

“I recently came across a fascinating TikTok about how famous athletes opt for lush, compact floral designs at their weddings,” Lievano adds. “This look reflects what the couple perceives as symbols of wealth or elegance in floral form. More untamed designs make people feel as if they’re breaking free from these conventional notions of beauty.”

Wildflower centerpieces are the perfect choice when you desire more variety for your dinner party decor. And for those who tend to rely on the same flowers repeatedly, incorporating wildflower elements can shake up your usual routines.

“Firstly, the more variety, the better,” Lievano suggests. “A wild meadow’s aesthetic benefits from a diverse mix of florals, not just your run-of-the-mill roses and carnations. Throw in a variety of textures too—a wildflower arrangement is an excellent opportunity to explore less conventional, yet equally beautiful blooms, like thistles.”

Choosing more untamed designs allows people to break away from traditional beauty norms.

For an authentic wildflower arrangement, consider what grows locally. Don’t shy away from greenery—Lievano incorporates two to three types in his designs for an organic feel. Avoid common fillers like baby’s breath and opt for greens like mixed eucalyptus or rosemary sprigs.

“Avoid thick woody stems and tropical flowers,” Lievano advises. “Sturdy stems like hydrangea or roses can disrupt the wild and natural look. Instead, opt for smaller, delicate stems such as ranunculus, spray roses, veronica, cosmos, and mini gerbera daisies.”

You can skip the florist visit by cutting flowers from your own garden or picking up a mixed selection from the local grocery store. While he doesn’t always advocate foraging, Lievano believes now is a prime time to give it a try. Wild textural stems like goldenrod, Queen Anne’s lace, and sea oats can be found growing by the roadside.

“Don’t take flowers from other people’s gardens, of course, but you can easily gather flowers that others might label as ‘weeds,’” he says. “When shopping for flowers, challenge yourself to overlook your usual picks. Skip the roses and peonies and explore what else the market or shop has to offer. You might discover some genuinely unique and beautiful stems you never noticed before.”

While using wildflowers can push you beyond your floral comfort zone, you can still rely on traditional arranging techniques to create a beautiful centerpiece, not just a haphazard collection of plants and petals. Add structure to your bouquet and secure flowers using floral foam (or sustainable alternatives) or tape along the inside of the vase to create defined areas.

Choose one or two flowers as the main focus, then use an odd number of stems to surround them for balance. Fill in with smaller supportive flowers and greenery, especially around the edges for a full look. Top it off with your smallest, most fragile flowers to prevent damage during arrangement.

Applying structure might seem counterintuitive to the wildflower trend, but it provides the right amount of polish to make your arrangement look purposefully crafted.

“Wildflower decor offers more creative freedom than, say, a uniform design of roses, yet you must still adhere to certain design principles like rhythm and balance, or your creation might end up looking like a chaotic mess,” Lievano concludes. “However, this wildflower aesthetic does enhance our appreciation for the natural world’s diversity and beauty, and that’s something worth celebrating.”
